Night walk experiences

-scroll down for Dark Sky Meander & Stargazing event at Dalby Forest

Walking at night in more remote places in winter carries much more risk which is why we urge everyone to come well prepared.  The weather in North Yorkshire can change suddenly - including heavy rain, mist, sleet which was not forecasted.  When cold and wet, this increases the risk of hypothermia which is a very serious condition. In such instances we would administer first aid, end the event immediately and lead the group to safety.

Please note if not sufficiently equipped we are within our rights - on Health and Safety grounds - to refuse participation on the day of the event. Any queries about anything, please do get in touch.

In preparation,   you’ll need to wear

  • Base layers (not cotton) on your top and legs (thermals are best and keep you warm while wicking away any perspiration)
  • Other warmer layers on top of base layers (I tend to wear 3 layers on my legs = thermal leggings, walking trousers, waterproof trousers)**
  • Please don’t wear jeans as these don't keep you warm

Then, wear/bring:

  • walking poles (if you find going down uneven slopes a bit difficult)
  • additional warmer layers (you will need them as it can get very cold)**
  • waterproof jacket & trousers (please bring both as weather can change)
  • a rucksack to put extra layers and waterproofs in
  • a headtorch - not a hand held torch - ensuring you know how to work it before the event. Please do not use your phone torch as batteries go flat in the cold very quickly***
  • spare batteries for your torch or ensure rechargeable ones are fully charged before heading out (plus bring spares)
  • waterproof walking boots (not wellies - unless they are the ones that you can walk several miles in comfortably and have a good grip)
  • water
  • a snack (if you suffer from low blood sugar)

** We’ll be stop / starting and walking slowly so you can get cold easily

*** PLEASE NOTE - if relying on your phone torch for light on this experience, we will refuse participation on the grounds of health and safety. If you don’t have a head torch, there are plenty of cheaper ones on this website. If you have any questions about any of the above, please get in touch.

Dark Sky Meander & Stargazing event - High Dalby House, Dalby Forest

This experience is different to our night walks as we are not out in the middle of nowhere. It includes food indoors, a short meander around High Dalby House's woods and an astronomy session. The risks of exposure and hypothermia are much less, however you can still get cold while outdoors so it pays to still wrap up warm.
