Hole of Horcum to see the Geminids

Meteors and Meanders - night walk to view the stars

Hole of Horcum, North York Moors National Park, England

Run in partnership with AFS Mountaineering

What you'll do

From the centre of this ancient land, the vistas are simply breathtaking. On a clear day you can see for miles across expansive moorland, while above, the skies are simply huge.

It's a perfect place to head out for a night walk, stopping every now and again to gaze in wonder at a sparkling, star-filled sky. View planets, constellations and the Milky Way arcing above. Or if you're really lucky, see colourful meteors shooting through the atmosphere.

Depending on the time of the year, you may see shooting stars. The Geminid's are one of the most spectacular, known to produce 100 meteors an hour at their peak. They can create a spectacular display with multi-coloured tails ranging from white, yellow and a few green, red and blue. But of course we can't guarantee we'll see it quite like this!

Even so, whether its clear or cloudy, we'll take you on an experience that'll ramp up your feel-good factor. Alison will weave in a sensory activity that'll reconnect you to this big wide-world so you'll see and hear so much more.

You'll also learn about planet earth, the night sky and deep time. You'll learn lots, take tools away with you -  and feel amazing too!

Of course we can't guarantee the weather, but even if it's cloudy, scientists have now proved embracing the dark is good for the soul. While walking at night is an incredible experience that is invigorating, immersive and boosts your mood too. What's not to like?!

Further information - PLEASE READ BEFORE BOOKING

The walk length will be roughly 4-5 miles and on good footpaths. There are hills, rough ground and mud in this walk route too.  For your comfort, a good level of fitness will be needed for this activity.

Where you'll be

This natural basin is  a sight to behold right in the centre of the National Park. It's a huge indentation in the rock, carved out by melting glacial ice and rivers millions of years ago.

There are some fantastic walking routes along the tops and down into the valley below, so we'll be spoilt for choice! It's also very accessible off the A169 too so you'll find it easily enough.

To reap the benefits of the evening, why not stay over? There are some wonderful places to stay. Take a look at the 'Stay Over' section above for accommodation ideas. If you get stuck and want to discuss ideas, get in touch.

Please note all joining instructions will be given to you nearer the date.
